1.What are your favourite contemporary art / design /
craft / interior magazines?
These may be hard-copy or online publications, eg:
www.designboom.com ;
ArtForum International, Urbis, Desktop, Pulp and Home magazines. I also flick through ones at the library which i wouldnt personally buy.
2. Why do you read these particular publications
(consider 'what's new' pages, design criticism,
interviews, etc);
I like interviews about designers being successful, and what got them where they are today. I love the new innovative designs coming out, and like to stay up with what are the new design trends. I love looking at the images, different media and once I find something I like, I read further and find criticism, and explanations of its true form. Also keeping an eye on graduates which are the up and coming designers.
3. Who are your favourite designers? Why do you find
their work particularly engaging? (Materials,
exploitation of new technologies, ornamentation, etc);
Well at this stage I havent done an indeep study of many designers. For my practice, I love to use a variety of designers that will lift and add to my work. I love playwright Bertolt Brecht, Film architct Richard Sylbert- for his large ambitious sets, Ken adam, and architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright for his amazing use of materials, and his pioneering thoughts about designing the house through to chairs. Manuelle Gautrand is one of my favourites too, with her main concern being "continuity of urban memory". My last one to highlight would be a Melbourne born designer, Engelen Moore. He uses a simple, elegant style. He emplies a few of Le Cobusiers theorys in his work where the inside should be kept minimial. He loves lines, and forms and how they take over a space.
4. If you were on a desert island, what five design
objects would you take with you, and why? (This does
not include boats, flares or other rescue devices!);
I would take a craft knife- because i can protect myself, hunt with it, and cut things like string, leaves etc.
I would take string, so i can fish, bind a hut together.
I would take a coolouring book and crayons to keep me occupied!
I would take a compass from my drawing kit so i dont get lost on the island when i explore it!
